Where to Stay for Full Moon Party
The right zone depends on how much you want to walk home after. Here's how the island's three main options actually compare.
Haad Rin
Loud, crowded, walkable to everything
To the beach
0–10 min walk
Price range
$15–80/night
Best for: First-timers who want zero travel hassle on party night
Pros
- Walk to the party — no songthaew needed after dark
- Highest density of hostels, bars, 7-Elevens, ATMs
- Easiest to meet other travelers
Cons
- Loudest area on the island, every night, not just Full Moon
- Prices spike hardest here on party dates — book early
- Beach itself gets fenced/ticketed and packed on party night
Thong Sala
The island's main town — quieter, more local, better food
To the beach
20–30 min songthaew
Price range
$10–50/night
Best for: Travelers who want to explore the island, not just party
Pros
- Cheaper than Haad Rin on non-party nights
- Main pier is here — convenient if you're island-hopping
- Real Thai food markets, less tourist markup
Cons
- Need a songthaew to and from Haad Rin on party night (30+ min, crowded)
- Less nightlife outside of Full Moon Party itself
Haad Yao / Haad Salad / Chaloklum (North & West Coast)
Quiet, scenic, resort-style — the anti-Haad Rin
To the beach
40–60 min songthaew or scooter
Price range
$20–100/night
Best for: Couples/families combining the party with a relaxed island trip
Pros
- Genuinely peaceful, good snorkeling and sunset views
- Better-value mid-range resorts than Haad Rin's party-priced options
Cons
- Long, sometimes rough transport to Haad Rin on party night — factor in return logistics before you book
- Fewer late-night food/transport options if your ride back is delayed
Book how early?
Haad Rin rooms during party dates get booked out weeks in advance, and prices climb the closer you get to the date. If you want to stay right in Haad Rin, book at least 3–4 weeks out. Thong Sala and the quieter beaches have more last-minute availability.
